Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
