European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
