No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
