Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
